Meet The Muse | Ruby Autore
What do South Sea Pearls and Merino wool have in common? They're both a natural wonder.
Introducing Ruby Autore, founder and creative director of Australian pearl house, Autore Moda.
Much like merino wool, South Sea pearls are celebrated for their inherent natural qualities. From size, quality and prestige, we chat with Ruby to find out how exactly she ended up working in the family business of pearls, what we need to know when it comes to sourcing and styling our own, and what the life of a jewellery designer in Sydney's Eastern Suburbs looks like between designing and launching a new store, managing the day-to-day of running a business and where she sources her inspiration.
Ruby! Tell us a little bit about yourself, what you do and how did you find yourself where you are today?
I’m the founder of AUTORE MODA, an accessible South Sea Pearl jewellery brand with a focus on sustainable luxury. My parents own pearl house AUTORE, and I have worked in the family business since finishing high school, and creating AUTORE MODA was a natural progression for me.
You recently launched your first flagship store in Double Bay (congratulations!), can you tell us a bit about this and what was involved?
Having a store has always been a dream of mine. The perfect location became available in Double Bay, so it was a bit of a no-brainer! I was lucky enough to work with one of my best friends, Alex Morrison Interiors, on the design of the shop, and she really helped my vision come alive. It was overwhelming at times but worth it to have such a beautiful space to showcase my designs.
Australian Pearls much like Australian Wool, are a highly sought-after natural wonder around the world, tell us, why is this and, when it comes to sourcing and styling our own Australian pearls, what do we need to know?
South Sea pearls are the most coveted of all pearls due to their size, quality and prestige. Produced by a living organism every pearl is different, which is what makes it so beautiful. When looking at pearls, choose something you are drawn to, their beauty is subjective and individual.
In your role as founder and creative director, where do you source your inspiration from?
This range of jewellery is a curation of pieces that I found were missing on the market, and that I personally would like to wear. I am inspired by things day to day, and love travelling to explore new trends, styles, colours and techniques in the jewellery world!
You live at beautiful Tamarama beach, what does a typical day in the life look like for you?
My typical work starts around 8.30 am - 9 am either at the shop in Double Bay or at our head office in the city. No two days are the same which I love, with my day filled with meetings and then tasks anywhere from designing new collections, admin & accounting to marketing – whatever is required from me that day in the business. I also try to fit in a walk or some pilates in the morning or afternoon depending on my schedule.

How would you describe your personal style and what’s going to be on heavy rotation in your wardrobe this spring?
My personal style is probably more on the classic side, I love my basics and investing in timeless pieces which you can dress up and down. My current go-to outfit is a singlet and tailored pants.
How does Ruby keep it INTACT?
Morning swims, pilates and dinner with the girls!
Lastly, what are some of the words you live by?
Treat others as you would like to be treated.
